A Fruit to a Seed is a multimedia documentary project exploring Black Milwaukee through its historic buildings and the elders who remember them. The project preserves overlooked places and stories, showing how the past grows into the present.
I photograph surviving buildings of historical significance using 4×5 and medium-format film, capturing architectural detail and presence to highlight the spaces that shaped community and culture. I also photograph Black elders and record interviews that share their memories, linking people to the places documented.
Each image is paired with notes from oral histories and research, creating a layered record of memory, place, and lived experience. A Fruit to a Seed affirms the resilience and contributions of Milwaukee’s Black community, preserving its history for future generations and making visible what has too often been overlooked.
