MARTA TEREZIYA

Born in Ukraine and based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marta Tereziya is a painter, woodworker, and installation artist whose practice explores the duality of existence, through displacement and occupying the present moment. Drawing inspiration from the unspoken rules of nature, her work invites moments of stillness, reflection, and reconnection. Through her airy brushstrokes and gentle use of material, Tereziya creates spaces that evoke a sense of calm while encouraging viewers to understand their place on Earth.

Tereziya received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where she majored in Fine Art + NSP and minored in Furniture. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States. She was a recipient of the Tidal Shift National Award, with her work exhibited at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, was selected as one of 50 artists for the Wisconsin Artists Biennial 2026 at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, and has exhibited at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

"I was born in Ukraine and moved to the States at the age of nine. Having been born in a country in a constant state of survival and fighting for freedom, I have witnessed a lot of pain onto all that is living. In turn, this motivated me to do the opposite: to carry a deep sense of hope, cherish all that is living, and create work that reminds others to stay present in this fleeting experience we call life.

I focus on painting, woodworking, and installation. My paintings are diffused in warm colors, alluding to the sun’s warm and silent existence. Translucency flows through my work, whether through layered paint or sheer fabrics. Imagery of nature and human presence intertwine, reflecting our inevitable connection with the natural world.

My wooden sculptures are living entities. Carefully preparing each cut, sanding the wounds, and bringing out the wood’s hidden color becomes a love language toward the tree itself. By using wood, a material that carries the history of humans using it for their benefit, I ask what happens when nothing occupies its presence. A careful, respectful notion is welcomed toward the tree itself, inviting reflection on humans' own actions.

Installation allows my work to expand into a shared space, inviting people to experience it together. The artwork becomes not only an object but a point of connection between individuals. Allowing people to connect more deeply to themselves and to one another, encouraging a recognition that we are not as separate as we may believe, not from each other, and not from the clouds above us.

Humans are interconnected with the natural world. We carry the capacity for destruction and healing, bloom and frost, fragility and strength. Through my work, I invite viewers to witness this experience of existence: to pause, breathe, and recognize our impermanence.

Just like the cloud above, we are not here forever.

So let us breathe together, okay?"
