HELENA  BAKA

PAINTING, SCULPTURE

Helena Baka's work consists of autobiographical paintings and sculptures that explore her overall identity as a first-generation Albanian-American woman. Her work features colorful figures and personal symbolism, such as the two-headed eagle of the Albanian flag and other fabricated creatures inspired by the flawed characters in Greek mythology. Interweaving themes of cultural diaspora, femininity, and childhood nostalgia, her work reveals the complexities of processing one's dual cultural identities and gaining self-acceptance.
