Ok, so - I have always liked monsters. Let's just get that out of the way. I wouldn't want you to think I'm trying to justify some affinity I haven't acknowledged. But when I started thinking more about monsters and what they meant for me - who the real monsters were - it always came back to some version of shame. Anger at someone else feels righteous -- but anger at yourself? That's a monster. As a comedian I have always dealt with things by adding humor, so it was the most obvious strategy for attacking shame: make some funny little monsters, so put the shame in perspective. As it turned out, the monsters also ended up serving another purpose: as my city (Los Angeles) burned in January, the time I spent in the studio making monsters was probably the least terrorized I felt all month. In the end, as I had hoped - the monsters became my friends (warts and worms and all.)
